  • Cornelius woman saved for months to afford doctor visits

    Dodi Mielke

     

    When Dodi Mielke lost her job, she also lost her health insurance. She had worked as a maintenance, shipping and parts manager for a computer support company that closed its Portland offices in March of 2010. “It really scared me, not having health insurance,” says Mielke, 52, of Cornelius.

    Mielke put off medical visits for preventive care because she couldn’t afford them.

  • Bridge program provides economic benefits

    The Oregon Transportation Investment Act (OTIA III) State Bridge Delivery Program replaced or repaired hundreds of aging highway bridges throughout the state. Grouping the work by highway corridors allowed contractors of all sizes, including small businesses -- woman-owned, minority-owned and disadvantaged business enterprises -- to bid on bridge program work. Since work started in 2003, 86 percent of the program's contracts have been awarded to Oregon-based firms.

    Oregon businesses and individuals earned more than $1 billion after taxes from work on the bridge program.
